13/04/14 ~ While waiting to meet my client at Woodleigh Close, I pop by to the popular Kovan Hawker Centre for settle my growling tummy.
This hawker centre has been well known by many and frequent by lots of Teo Chews as many of the food that was available was of Teo Chew's favourite. Hougang has been a Teo Chew village since the starting of Singapore and is now still a sorted after place to stay by many. With the upgrading that was done years back, the older generation of Teochew hawkers had reduced significantly due to old age & lack of successors.
Yam Mee is situated at the centre row which is easily identify by the Q they have. The cook has a stern face but the order taker always smiles and she is very polite.
Mee Pok has been cooked well but might be due to my additional noodles, it has a slight taste of yeast, if its cooked for another 10sec it could be totally washed off. Good thing is that the chilli mixture is well scented with frangence oil and bits of spices enhanced everything well, chilli is not too spicy despite added chilli, tingling taste of saltiness. The serving is topped with 5 different ingredients ~ springy normal fishball, a bigger fishball with more texture of sotong and fishcake mixture, meatball, minced meat, sliced fishcake & braised chinese mushroom.
Adding on to my breakfast, braised chicken feet is another of my favourite food. But Yam's chicken feet is rather different from others as they added other ingredients and spices to enhance. Yellow beans (黄豆)and anise are added to the cooking process to sweeten the broth and star anise to bring out the frangence of the dish. Beancurd skin is also added on top of the standard mushroom which is a free topup to your order. Relatively tender in terms of the food which makes it paletable to many diners.
Yam sells curry chicken noodles as well which I had seen some ordered but had yet to try. Will give it a shot and share my review other time.
