Beach Road Prawn Noodles at East Coast Road

Prawn noodles is nothing great but when its along East Coast Road it's a different story. This stall had grown from 1 shop to 2 shops in their years after relocation from beach road.

Beach Road Prawn Noodles had first started in beach road area.
Arguably one of Singapore's most famous prawn mee stalls, Beach Road Prawn Noodle House at East Coast has been around since 1986.

You have a choice of Prawn Mee on its own or with pork ribs, both sold at $5.50, $8.80 and $10.80. But the biggest draw of the eatery is their Jumbo Prawn Mee, which costs $10.80. The difference between the Jumbo and the regular prawn mee is the type of prawns used.
For the normal bowls they use farmed tiger prawns, while for the Jumbo, they use tiger prawns from the ocean. At a glance, the only difference is the size of the prawns, but when you take a bite into them, the difference in taste is obvious as they are much more fragrant.
Another thing that sets the eatery apart from other famous food stalls is the short waiting time maximum of 15 minutes

The noodles are cooked just right giving you the bite feel. The chilli is not too spicy with the taste of garlic and onion which gives you slight heat yet not too overwhelming.
The pig tail is cooked till soft and easily palatable with the soft cologen and tender skin. But the piggy smell is slightly strong which many might not be able to take it. The jumbo tiger prawns are fresh, sweet and chewy. Giving you wonderful experience on this dish that got many followers for decades.  $10.80 a bowl is slightly overpriced in my opinion given that you have only 5 pcs of pig tail and 1 prawn.
But the good deal is that their soup is refillable.  The soup is sweet and aromatically filled with prawn smell which makes it a perfect broth, which I refilled 3 rounds.

It started out as a humble hawker stall at Beach Road run by Mr Lee's father, until he decided to strike out on his own and open shop at East Coast Road.
Many of their existing customers were from the East side, particularly the nyonyas in Katong.

Good to give it a shot as it is traditionally prepared food left behind by the older generation.

Cantonese Wan Ton Mee ~ Zhong Guang Wan Ton Mee (正光云吞面)

正光云吞面~ Once a glorious and crowded cinema at Tanjong Katong Road called "Hollywood Theatre" which was a place where many older generation Singaporean used to spend their time there. Movies and shows by many overseas artist bought life to this place and well as one of the favourite food street in Singapore.

Hollywood Coffeeshop is situated right behind the cinema under the shade of a big tree. 正光云吞面was visited by many for their very traditional style wan ton mee. Other than the friendliness of the stall owner, the delicious food is a crowd puller that bought many eaters, especially during weekends.

Chewy and moist char sio coupled with fresh wan ton and prawn dumplings enhance the overall taste, complementing the chewy and Q texture of their egg noodles (全蛋面), from the faithful supplier which the owners had been using for decades.

The noodle comes in black sauce with chilli or tomatoes sauce mixed with frangence oil and pork lard. Very traditional Cantonese style serving which is a choice for many especially the older generation. Their ingredients are all handmade which the owners had been sticking to it from day 1. The wan ton's filling is a mixture of minced meat and Stockfish "Ti Por/柴鱼" which is getting costly lately. Their prawns in their dumplings is very fresh. Stockfish enhanced the taste and smell of the wan tons which is 1 of the pull factor for decades.

Every since the old coffeeshop shifted due to en bloc, 正光shifted to the upgraded Haig Road Food Centre. The owners are still diligently serving their customers the most traditional and original preparation.

They had been featured in TV some time back, click here

Sarawak Kolo Mee @ Tampines

Tampines round market is a familiar name to many, especially those residing in the east. As the name tells you, the market is round since decades back the unique structure has been an icon in Tampines.

Having roadshow at this place is always a pleasure, the influx of people from all over the place brought life to the marketplace.  Other than the fresh supply of poultry and vegetables, hawker food is another crowd puller.

Situated at 2nd row of the stalls, Sarawak Kolo Mee is a Q gatherer.  It is hard to missed when you stroll to the back.

The varieties of noodles makes you indecisive but their signature Kolo Mee is a must try. The noodles is mee kia scalded to perfection in boiling water and mixed with deep fried shallots with frangence oil coupled with pork lard. This mixture is well enough to get you to devour the noodles without adding extra sauces. Topped with fried wan ton, few slices of char sio, veg, braised pork ribs and wan tons, will fill your stomach to the brim. The thick braised sauce enhance the overall taste adding a smooth texture and saltiness to the whole combination.

Many more others choices which I will separately update my readers in due course.

Address: Blk 137 Tampines st 11.
Cost: range from $3~$5.

Lunchy @ The Roast House

Running errands in the western Singapore bought me to this coffeeshop at CCK Blk 429, to escape from the killing weather, we decided to have lunchy. Typical coffeeshop selling chinese food but 1 stall that caught my eyes....

Bearing white signage it says...The Roast House. Seems like a normal western food in any other coffeeshop but this stall is sellling roast! Their signature dish is Roast Chicken which is hardly found in coffeeshops which I had gone to, or I should say non. They do sell others like BBQ Honey Chicken Chop, Black Pepper Chicken Chop, Crispy Chicken, Spaghetti and Fish & Chips.

My kids ordered their usual fav spaghetti with Chicken Chop, wifey ordered "lady's choice" Fish & Chips, while I decided to try their Roast Chicken. Understood from the stall owner that the chix is abt 1kg ,which is, I think would be ok for me.

The setup of the stall and the equipments used wasn't our typical kinds. No hot plates but fryers and a big silvery oven seen at the rear end of the stall. While the owner's wearing an apron with the words "Culinary Institution of America", I asked if he came back from America learning how to cook. Which I understood that he is actually graduated from Singapore's 1st batch of culinary students from CIA (Singapore) at Temasek Poly.

Food came fast (less than 10mins), the presentation was much better than normal western food with most of the chops "erracted", nicely plated, the whole roast chicken served in what it seems to be a chopping board but nicely presented.

Spaghetti with chicken chop is loved by my kids and the chop is tender with slight crisp on the skin. Spaghetti is well cooked not too hard nor soft with just enough tomato sauce.

Fish & chips comes with a serving of coleslaw, sautéed button mushrooms and of cos fries, fries are the better cuts (thicker types but not wedges). Fish is crispy outside but tender inside without the fishy smell and of a thicker fillet. Sautéed mushroom is nicely frangence with herbs while the coleslaw is a mixture of cabbage, purple cabbage & carrots, nicely crunchy bites without overly sweeten.

Roast Chicken stuffed with great frangence of rosemary herb, carrots, celery, onion and lemon. The juice if the chix could be seen seeping out from the chix. Many diners are concerned about the dryness of the chicken breast ,but trust me, this is different.  The breast is moist and tasty, you have to try to witness it. The aromatic frangence enhance the overall dining experience which is a rare find in coffeeshops.  The juice within the chicken thigh when you pry open the drum just flows onto the board. It's a real good experience esp when you eat using your hands.

Good quality food which is hardly found in coffeeshops which you must visit if you're near Choa Chu Kang. Thumbs up for the stall which live up to the name."The Roast House"

Nasi Briyani

Long lost local favourite of many different races. It has been years since they shifted to Bedok Central in 2008. The selling rate for this delicacy is a fast sell out by 1030am. If you are a lover of Briyani, its a must try if you are around bedok.

His briyani is made from the long and fragrant basmati rice of India. He usually gives generous amounts of meat topped with a mountain of rice, and his dalcha is SUPER POWER! This is a must try nasi briyani! He sells CHICKEN and MUTTON briyanis.
Amongst all the briyanis I have tried, I believe this one is the BEST! And unlike many other stalls, he prioritize his HYGIENE most! But I warn you, if you really want to try his briyani, you must be there BEFORE 10 A.M! I'm not joking, he usually starts selling his briyani after dawn and finishes before 10.30 a.m! That shows how people are CRAVING for his briyani!

The spices are pretty much the same but the difference is on the timing and fire control of cooking the rice. Clearly coloured and grainy rice enhanced the rice and selling look.

The curry is well spiced and the heatbis just nice. The owner had mixed 2 different kinds, vegetables and the mutton (thicker and meaty tasted) where the 2 combination bring the frangence of the briyanis to another height.

Chicken drumstick with thighs is served which is tender and crispy which gave you a "crackling" bite feel when you sink your teeth into it.

Chill out @ Milk&Honey Gelato

Headed down to one of my family's fav gelato chill out place last night for some snack.  My kids loved Ice-Cream and waffles where we used to visit Udders (Katong) but their waffles standard had dropped after their renovation. IScream just opposite my place at Blk 89 Bedok North Ave 4 is a worst place to visit. iScream has very bad service attitude, so I left them out on the very 1st visit to them.

Milk&Honey Gelato is a small setup with wonderful service and product. They don't sell too many fanciful products but Clemen (the owner) does its well.

We tried Mao Shan Wang on waffle and single scope of Cookie Monster & Gianduja (roche chocolates). Tip top Mao Shao Wang is the best recommendation if you guys wanna try. Smells is terrific while the Ice-Cream offers you the real texture of durain flesh, Yes! Real durain flesh in the Ice-Cream. Unlike othera that I tried even Udders don't have such experience. The waffle is nice and crispy which goes well with the Mao Shan Wang.
Cookie Monster is nicely blended with oreo cookies in tiny bitable bits rather than chunky pieces of oreo.
Gianduja (roche chocolates) surprisingly is not as sweet but of slight bitter tasted but not to the extend of dark bitter chocolate. Its a perfect choice for your kids if you do not want them to have overly sweet tooth.

Teochew Fishball Noodles @ Kovan

13/04/14 ~ While waiting to meet my client at Woodleigh Close, I pop by to the popular Kovan Hawker Centre for settle my growling tummy.

This hawker centre has been well known by many and frequent by lots of Teo Chews as many of the food that was available was of Teo Chew's favourite.  Hougang has been a Teo Chew village since the starting of Singapore and is now still a sorted after place to stay by many. With the upgrading that was done years back, the older generation of Teochew hawkers had reduced significantly due to old age & lack of successors.

Yam Mee is situated at the centre row which is easily identify by the Q they have. The cook has a stern face but the order taker always smiles and she is very polite.
Mee Pok has been cooked well but might be due to my additional noodles, it has a slight taste of yeast, if its cooked for another 10sec it could be totally washed off. Good thing is that the chilli mixture is well scented with frangence oil and bits of spices enhanced everything well, chilli is not too spicy despite added chilli, tingling taste of saltiness.  The serving is topped with 5 different ingredients ~ springy normal fishball, a bigger fishball with more texture of sotong and fishcake mixture, meatball, minced meat, sliced fishcake & braised chinese mushroom.

Adding on to my breakfast, braised chicken feet is another of my favourite food. But Yam's chicken feet is rather different from others as they added other ingredients and spices to enhance. Yellow beans (黄豆)and anise are added to the cooking process to sweeten the broth and star anise to bring out the frangence of the dish. Beancurd skin is also added on top of the standard mushroom which is a free topup to your order. Relatively tender in terms of the food which makes it paletable to many diners.

Yam sells curry chicken noodles as well which I had seen some ordered but had yet to try. Will give it a shot and share my review other time.

Coy: Yam Mee Teochew Fishball Mee

Cost: Mee ~ $3.50/ $4.50, add mee $0.50, Chicken Feet $3.

Wan Ton Mee in Tampines Blk162

10/03/14 ~ With numerous food centres and coffeeshops in Tampines, food hunting here is as easy as 123. But to find a real gem in the wan ton mee arena is a great challenge. Xing Ji(星记) is hidden in a humble coffeeshop at Blk 162, 10mins walk from Tampines MRT, is a must try stall if you are around this area.

Springy egg noodles is well boiled keeping the texture of the noodles with bite feel between your teeth. The chilli is the main lure that kept me going back for more. The mix of garlic, dried shrimp, dried & fresh chilli blended together giving you an aromatic flavour and lightly salted taste, Yet not overwhelming heat from the chilli makes it a good choice even for kids. Coupled with the frangence of sesame oil enhanced the overall experience.
The "Char Sio" is too thinly sliced to taste much flavour but was easily palatable. The soup is milky with lightly salted tasted without the MSG after taste.

The add-on chicken feet is another classic dish. Deep fried and braised in light sause with garlic, soften the chicken feet while retaining the texture.

Coy: Xing Ji Wan Ton Mee (星记)
Add: Blk 162 Tampines st 12
Pricing: $3, $4, $5 Add-on extra charge.

Breakfast Bak Chor Mee - Lai Heng Toa Payoh Blk 51

930am 07/03/14 ~ Escaped today from my routine morning swim at Safra with the craving for hot, soupy breakfast.  And it bought me to Lor 5 Toa Payoh Blk 51 for steamy Bak Chor Mee!

来興肉脞面on the yellow signboard is an eye catcher which many wouldn't missed when you walk into the coffeeshop.  Operated by 3 aunties for many years, they have their own group of fans which always made Q of waiting time of avg. 15mins and longer during lunch hours.

Served in clear hot soup topped with pig liver, minced meat, sliced pork and savoury braised mushrooms. The taste of the soup is slight savoury with the braised mushroom smell that is light on your taste bud. The sliced pork is fat-free lean meat with good texture but yet tender. Minced meat is soft and not chunky unlike many other stalls that you find minced meat in lumps. Mine had another 2 thin slice of abalone.

Over all experience is well worth the wait to cull my craving.

Coy: Lai Heng Minced Meat Mee
Add: Blk 51 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh
Cost: $3, $4, $5

Adding on to make my breakfast more filling, the small stall next to it selling traditional handmade Soon Kway, rice kway, ang ku kway and many others is being targeted.  I ordered 2pcs of Soon Kway topped with Dark Sweet sauce and chilli. The skin of the kway is thin and clearly translucent, filling with tunip & dried small shrimps lightly salted tasted. It is getting rare that handmade traditional kways are made, lots of hardwork and thin margin deters many from carrying on the trade especially younger generation.
Each cost $0.80/pc.

Wan Ton Mee Fav

4th March 2014 ~ A humble coffee shop hiden along the buzzing road of Sim Ave (Geylang). Hunt for Wan Ton Mee is on.
Koung's wan tan mee printed on a red signboard is seen with queue. The noodles are of decent serving coupled with char sio, veg & a bowl of soup with 3pcs of wan ton.
The smell of the frangence oil(香油) flows through your nose when you scoop up the noodle. The noodle texture is good with chewy feel when u bite onto.
Chilli is mild taste even after I had asked for extra.
The char sio is moist with a little of fats. The fillings for the wan ton is packed with soft thin skin.
The most classic ingredient is the crackling deep fried pork lard which enhanced the whole flavour of the noodles.

Overall experience is good with the aunty's friendly service.

Parking maybe a challenge as there is only a small road to park along the roadside.

Find them at:
Add: 205 Sim Ave. S387506
Closed every Monday.

Coffee Time at Changi V

Choc Full Of Beans @ Changi Village is hidden at a corner of Blk 4, away from the view of many. I was introduced to this cafe by a lady friend of mine. The place is cosy and their service are pretty good. The area is rather serene but windy the constraint is space if they could put in more seats at the open area.

The desert they served are beautify by the cute artwork of cartoon characters which many of us are familiar. For today I had Flappy Bird, Pooh, Forever Friends & a Cat.

Taste is as good as the drawings, (Cat) Cheese cake is soft and cheesy (though it's a little wet) it's tasted alright.
(Forever Friends) Dark Chocolate cake is nicely baked with lots of chocolates! Chocolate lovers would love it.

(Pooh) Hazelnut chocolate as name suggest the hazelnut content in hot chocolate. The woody smell gives you a refreshing taste with the aromatic chocolate taste makes it a gd choice for many. Chocolate is one of the "Happy" food/ingredients that enhanced the mood of humans especially ladies.

(Flappy Bird) Piccolo Latte is new to me & I gave it a shot. Traditionally, a Piccolo Latte is a ristretto shot (15 – 20 ml) topped with warm, silky milk served in a 100 ml glass demitasse (small latte glass) … basically, a baby latte, as the Italian pronunciation suggests. But it's real small cup like an espresso. Very light taste of coffee with lots of milk taste. Meant for light coffee drinkers.
