Molly Roffey's Irish Pub

Rarely do we come across many good Irish pubs is Singapore let alone one that served good food and Guinness. Molly Roffey's Irish Pub is one of the longest home grown Irish pubs that had grown their roots in our Little Red Dot.

This joint is along New Bridge Road near to the crossed junction of where Cantoment Police Station is. Right below Dorsett Residence, where the gold plated words catches your attention, Molly Roffey's Irish Pub stood.

Molly Roffey's Irish Pub had been around in Singapore since 2010 start by a true Irish Man. Irish is famous for their Guinness & Irish Whiskey.

You will see this on almost every tap in every Irish pubs which serves thick, smooth stout that just slides down your throat. I wasn't a real fan of Guinness but decided to give it a shot at Molly. Smoothing texture with light fragrance of the roasted unmalted barley fills your taste bud when it flows through your throat.

The menu has a wide range of products from starters to desserts and snack food for your drinking pleasure. Nice spread of food to choose from but it's a little overwhelming. Ordered few dishes and sat there enjoying the guinness and watching football while waiting for the food. Molly Roffey does telecast of EPL on match days as well.

Irish stew ($16.80) in the Irish way served with 4 sticks of bread.
The savoury taste of the stew just fills your mouth with the sweetness from the vegetables consisting of diced carrots, potatoes, beans and tomatoes. Light taste of peppers enhanced the diced vegetable softness and sweetness while they melts away in your mouth. The lamb offers excellent bite feel while you sink your teeth into it gently, the lamb is so soft after the long period of slow cooking that the juice from the lamb just burst and melts away into your buds. A real good starter to begins with and its a must try item when you visit MR.

Pork Ribs ($26.80/Full rack) came in time when I drown myself with Guinness and the overall experience just appreciated when the flesh from the tender ribs just rips itself off effortlessly. The rib is slow-cooked to perfection leaving the whole rack intact but soft and tender while you pulls off from the bone.
The Guinness BBQ sauce gives tingly sweet & sourish sauce goes well with the ribs and there is a afterburner of slight heat of hot sauce. The rib is well marinated without some porky smell that some places served, if you know what i meant.

Molly Roffey's Rib-eyes Prime Steak ($20.80 220gms) is chargrilled (Medium) served with mushroom sauce is a perfect combination which i always loved, the mushroom sauce which is mild in taste would not cover up the taste and sweetness of the steak. The medium done ribeye is pretty well grilled and both sides of the steak is sealed with grill marks and all the juices locked in. Juice just flows out from the steak as you sliced. the sweet taste of the meat could be tasted while you chew and nice aromatic smell of the beef fills your taste buds. The mushrooms sauce is creamy and filled with taste of mushroom which blends well with the ribeye that forms a great combination.

Fish & Chips ($14.80) is another must try especially for the ladies as the batter is crispy yet thin which is rarely found. The serving of the fish fillet is of reasonable size with the curly fries served just made this dish better then those cheaper straight cut fries. Crunchy bite feel of the fillet with the garlic-lemon sauce that brings out the sweetness of the premium dory fillet.

After drowning 2 glasses of Guinness, the finale comes with the Irish Guinness Pie ($18.80) with a well baked buttery crusty puff. The braised dark savoury stock is flavourful with the taste of guinness brown sauce coupled with the sweetness from the vegetables and the beefy chunks. The chunks are soft in texture while you eat together with the puff that sucks the stock into itself. This pie gives you a experience of the wonders that Irish food give, a true Irish dish that anyone will die for.

Fusion food with a twist of English

The Coastal Settlement - Fusion food with an English taste. Surrounded by the serene, greenery environment which adds a scene of beauty to the warm sunlight at noon.

The old english Black and white building that houses this vintage restaurant at Changi @ 200 Netheravon Road just opposite the old Changi hospital.

The vintage setup would be one of the attractions that arose your curiosity before the food are being served. From broken old plates, cash register to tables and chairs used in the restaurant made the overall experience even better. The menu has a wide spread of choices that you could hardly make up your mind on which to order. Ranging from western food to local delights and modern desserts of Lava Cakes makes you salivary.

Wifey ordered a prawn alio olio, wild mushrooms soup, curry chicken with rice and ending with Lava cake for the dessert.

Mushrooms soup served in a metal tin and 3 slices of French loaf started the session. The mushroom fragrance is very nice and chunks of mushrooms would fill your tastebud while you sink your teeth into the savoury soup. It's a little salty to me but dipping the bread into the soup would served really well. Sad to say that we found a long hair in the soup which the waiter promptly exchanged a new bowl for us, other then that everything is good.

The prawn alio olio is a different experience from the norm that we usually eat. TCS had added a fusion taste to it with a mix of nyonya to the cooking. The chilli shrimp paste was used to bring the aglio olio to the next level where the East meets the West. Well combination of both with savoury taste.

Slow cooked curry chicken with jasmine rice is another decent choice to have. The aromatic fragrance of coconut milk and strong lemon grass smell further enhance the curry dish. Light smell of dried shrimps lingering around your tastebud makes you wanting more of the gravy. Chicken meat is soft and immersed with curry spice and lemon grass smell which could be better If the spiciness could be stronger.

Their service are great and friendly yet fast serving. Attention from the staffs are not overlooked despite only about 5 of them over looking the 70 seaters restaurant.

Dessert came with nice plating and decent portion. The sourish berries when coupled with the sweet chocolate lava balanced out well. It's sweet enough to brighten up your day which keeps you happy. The lava cake was warm and the scoop of icecream makes a good combination when warm and cold meets while the twist and turns in your mouth. If more time is given for the cake to be heated, the lava flowing would be of a greater impact on visuals.

Nice place for chill out at noon with a beautiful natural greenery painting from The Lord.

Bistro by the beach @ East Coast Park - Atmosphere

Sweet time with my wifey after a stressful day from my ACTA, newly development by NParks which gave life to ECP where lots of people in Singapore loved to chilled out in the evening and weekends.

Atmosphere the bistro by the sea, served western food including pizza and desserts like the rainbow cakes. They served tuffles fries and some other finger food as well.

The ambience of This bistro is rather nice with the natural sea breeze welcoming you while you tuck in to the food. Great friendly staffs to serve you after punching in your order with their iPads.  A good way to cutting time than waiting for the staffs to attend to you.

The hot chocolate drink comes in a tiny tea cup which is nice but with a little too much of milky taste which compromised the faint chocolate taste.

Ordered their Spicy seafood pizza which contains squid, tuna, prawn and chilli padi.  The thin crust is nicely done and toast to perfection,  the pizza was added with a pinch of local taste after adding chilli padi to it. This is a better choice between the 2 dishes I had ordered. The prawns are a little small but does tasted fresh as well as the squid rings which offers a nice bite feel compared to many others which gave you  rubber bite.

The most let down dish is the "spicy" Buffalo wings, not a taste of spicy and all the drumlets are not coated Well with the "hot" sauce. Don't think it should be named buffalo wings, It's more like a calf wings...damn tiny.

Overall experience is not too bad especially coupled with nice sea view and cool breeze. Good place to chill with a beer and pizza.

Whatsfood at Genki Sushi!

1st Time visiting Genki Sushi.  simply love their concept of service. Decent food and Great varieties comparing to the other sushi joints.

The food are rather reasonable priced and pretty fresh. Their chawamushi is nice, soft & tasty most important it is served hot! The most unique thing about Genki is on their service and fast table turnover. Most of the tables are of self service and the food are served with low risk of contamination by serving via serving trains... Yes... toy trains that will notify you that this ride is serving your food direct from the kitchen.  It's nice and very attractive to children.
Good concept with friendly service, do try it out for the fun of it.

2 adults and 2 kids spent $68 for dinner.

Hoe Nam Prawn Noodles (Night)

Hoe Nam Prawn noodles has been located at their current place for the past decade selling mainly Prawn noodles. There're 2 operations AM / PM,  some says the AM/PM stalls are siblings which I think so too as the stall holders looked pretty much alike.

The day stall is managed by mainly ladies and their soup is filled with Prawn taste, smell & thick essence of the prawns. Their ingredients are fresh and the springy bite feel of their prawns makes all the waiting worthy. It's a must try stall if you are around Macpherson area, but do prep yourself for at least 20mins of wait.

Coming to the PM stall, the ingredients are as fresh. The Prawn are Sweet and springy & the pork ribs are tender and soft that the rib bone detached itself with a slight pull, the juice of the pork coupled with the soup, just oozed and fill your taste bud.

The downside of the PM stall is on their soup.... I just named it "Diabetes Soup", thick looking soup which seems to be filled with all the essence Until you sipped it in. Very slight prawn taste but all you would tasted is the overwhelming sugary taste of sugar that fills you with lots of sweetness. To make things worst, the uncle who is doing the cooking, changes his gloves just to take his smoking  break with his New gloves.... OMG!  He comes back into his boiler and starts grabbing the ingredients and noodles with his tar filled gloves..! Too bad for the 3 air force guys ahead of me.....
Their so-called "Big Prawn" are about the size of "Medium " that you would see in Giant. Which  I feel a little cheated on this matter.  You should see other yourself to believe.

But a word of fairness is that both their ingredients are fresh and their noodles are cooked to perfection. Other than the soup and hygiene difference the rest are pretty OK.

Do try both the stalls to have a better  understanding of the dish.

I would recommend the AM stall instead if you Really wanna try.

Tim Sum @ Ah Yat Jurong

Ah Hat Seafood Restaurant ~ Celebrating my MIL birthday at Ah Yat Jurong after having heard from friends that the Tim Sum was pretty good and decided to head for a feast.

The service was really friendly and we are bought to sit pretty fast. Promotion for their Tim Sum at 40% was pretty much a bargain.

The Tim sum, frankly is not really nice other then the XLB, fried fish skin, Har kao, siu mai and Chee Chong Fun. The Ee Fu noodles is too salty though the texture of the noodle is not too bad.
Chicken feet other then sweetness of the sauce which is too overpowered.
口水鸡being a cold dish was served warm but only the plate is cold. With texture of the chicken that is tough and dry is not really palatable though the sauce is nicely flavored.

Xiao Long Bao (XLB) was nicely done with thin skin and generous filling, the minced meat is very fine with slight savory taste. I would reccommand this item if only they could have more soup in the XLB.

Diners who have thoughts about visiting them should avoid peak hours as I believed that the quality of the tim sum would be better.

For now my option would be better to leave Ah Yat out unless you have no other choices.

Coy: Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant (Birdpark)
Cost: $179 (after less 40%) ~ $19.89/pax

Seoul Yummy~ So Yummy

Hwan-yeong! Great Korean Food with most of their ingredients brought in from Korea, Seoul Yummy had opened their 4th outlet in Marina Square. With a newer fusion concept of korean delicacy, the design of the outlet is more of the Pop Culture of Korea.

With the well spread sitting arrangements, Diners could enjoy their meal comfortably. Overlooking Marina Boulevard, if you sit by the window,  you
can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the beautiful street view.
The menu is filled with the pictures of their food which allows diners to make their choosing easier especially seniors like me who prefers to look at pictures than words. We were spoilt for choice thus we decided to go with the recommendations on the menu as everything seems very tempting.

For starters, we ordered Braised Pork Belly, Kimchi Pancake & Spicy Rice Cake.
Main dishes were Ginseng Chicken Soup, Army's Stew, Sindangdong Doekbokki & Andong Jjim Dak. And the meal is not completed without the dessert which we had Korean Patjook & Special Trio Bingsoo.
Another plus point about Seoul Yummy is that their side dishes are FOC and free flow, with the pickles, chilli anchovies, toufu, kimchi, radish & watercress.

Braised Pork Belly ($9.90)

Braised Pork Belly is braised with dark soya sauce with light saltiness which enhanced the sweetness of the pork belly. The layers are clearly distinguished from the skin to the fats and flesh. Cooked nicely till soft which just melts in your mouth. The belly is not too oily but yet fragrance of the pork smells just right.

Kimchi Pancake ($7.90) - Served in hot stone plate, the pancake is pretty crispy that is lightly charred adds on to the experience of this dish. The fillings are of chunky kimchi which is lightly spicy but more of a sourish taste which opens up your taste bud.
Classic dish of Spicy Rice cake ($8.90) is one of my favorite Korean dish especially when it is real spicy. The rice cake is very well done given the fact that it is not "Teeth Sticking", coupled with the chilli sauce, it is a real dish that all visitors should order.Spicy Rice Cake ($8.90)

The service is pretty good which they served the mains only after clearing our starters.
Andon Jjim Dak ($39.90) - Chicken parts cooked with various vegetables marinated in Korean Soy Sauce, stirred fried with Korean glass noodles which is savoury in taste as it sucked up the sauces giving it great taste and bite feel. It could be improved if the chef could reduce the amount of dark sauce used but I am glad that it wasn't too salty.
The well-known Army's Stew is served with a stove which allows diners to eat direct from the pot. Army's Stew is a dish that was cooked during war time and had been handed down since, the ingredients are all placed in the pot and cooked. This served the soldiers a filling meal as well as helping they to kreb the coldness in the wild.

Army's Stew ($36.90) has lots of ingredients which includes kimchi, pork belly, Spicy chicken, beef bake beans, vegetables, enoki mushroom, hotdog, luncheon meat and of course Korean instant noodles. The soup is of spicy based and well boiled with the essences of the ingredients. Bringing the pot to boil for about 5mins cooks this dish just nice, soft noodles and tender assorted meat coupled with the great favoured soup which fills your mouth with the aromatic taste.

DOEKBOKKI ($39.90) to my surprise this is a snack item rather than a main dish according to Koreans. This is a specialty dish in SINDANGDONG if you visit Korea that is a common "snack". Bean paste taste liked is used to add savoury taste to the snack. Topped with marinated sliced beef, rice cake, dumplings, hard boiled egg, assorted vegetables & Korean noodles. Served on a stove for the diners to enjoy a piping hot meal. The beef is nice when boiled in the broth, the rice cake is as good as the starter. The soup is slightly too salty for me and a lesson learnt is that once the noodle is cooked, stop the flame, as it causes the soup to be thicken pretty fast and the ingredients gets soggy after leaving the flame on.

Dessert is a spoilt for choice for us. Everything seems so yummy but we decided on a Hot & a Cold item to end our day.

Pat Jook (Red Bean) ($7.90) is served with mushmellow which you are supposed to dip into the red bean paste to add sweetness to it. The paste itself is not a really sweet "Sweet" dessert like our local chinese. It is lightly sweeten with the green tea mochi. 2 different kinds of red bean in terms of their different texture, 1 is cooked till soft like our chinese redbean while the other is cooked but not till overly soft. The combination gives you a different experience on the dessert will palatability of softness and bite feel texture makes this dessert enjoyable.

6 Turns of Yogurt Mango Ice Cream is served with fruits and nata de-coco sitting on ice with syrup, just like our Ice Kacang.
Korean Special Trio Bingsoo ($7.90) tasted real good the smooth texture of the ice cream with the fruity taste of different fruits gave a grand finale to the dinner.

The whole visit to Seoul Yummy is totally wonderful especially having to try their new items where other outlets had yet to served. Do pay them a visit if you want to try some fusion Korean delicacy.
